About this spot

Knokke-Heist, and the Surfers Paradise zone at the eastern end of town, is the birthplace of Belgian kitesurfing and still its busiest centre. The beach here is the widest on the Belgian coast, backed by dunes rather than a sea wall, and it is home to several kite schools and clubs. In season hundreds of riders launch here, so zones are organised between the schools and marked with beach flags — launch and land only in the designated areas.

W, SW and NW winds are the working directions and blow side- to cross-onshore along this stretch. Southerly and south-easterly winds come off the land, are gusty over the city and are dangerous. A distinctive feature of the whole Belgian coast is the row of wooden groynes dividing the beach into compartments — plan your downwind line so you never drift onto one. The tide is large (around 4–5 m): at low tide a huge shallow, flat stretch opens up, while two to three hours either side of high tide leaves a much narrower beach with breaking waves close in. The water is cool all year (roughly 8–17 °C) — a 4/3 mm suit is standard, 5/4 mm outside summer.

Access is from the Zeedijk; Surfers Paradise has its own car park, showers, café and rental. The spot suits everyone: beginners learn in the school zones, freestylers ride the low-tide flats, and on stronger days riders push out towards the small swell.
