About this spot
Hanko is Finland's wind capital: the Tulliniemi peninsula at the country's southernmost tip sticks out into the Gulf of Finland, so wind from almost any direction is sailable somewhere along its shores. When the wind blows from the south you ride the north side in flatter water; when it swings north you move to the southern beaches. That flexibility makes Hanko the most reliable spot in southern Finland.
S, SW and SE work on the northern shore; N, NE and NW work on the southern shore; westerlies can be ridden on either side with care. The water is mostly choppy with flat patches in the lee of the peninsula, over a sandy bottom with rocky sections — boots are a good idea. Tulliniemi itself is a protected nature reserve: the very tip is off-limits during bird nesting season, so use the marked beaches and respect the fences. The water is cold — the Gulf of Finland only warms to about 15–17 °C in late summer.
Hanko town is a classic wooden-house seaside resort with harbours, cafés and summer life. Parking is near the beaches; the drive from Helsinki is about 1.5 hours. Suitable for intermediates and up — the rocky entries and shifting wind call for some experience, though the sandy northern beaches are friendlier for learning.
