About this spot
Kalajoki's Hiekkasärkät ('sand ridges') are the best-known dunes in Finland: a long, gently shelving sandy beach on the Bothnian Bay with a full holiday resort behind it. For kitesurfers the draw is simple — shallow, clean water over a flat sandy bottom, with standing depth extending far from shore and very few obstacles.
W, NW and SW winds blow onshore to side-onshore and work best; northerlies along the coast are also sailable. E and SE come over the land and are offshore and dangerous. The water stays shallow for a long way out, which keeps chop small and makes it one of the safest learning environments in the country. Being this far north, the water is cold: even in July and August it rarely exceeds 16–18 °C, and in spring and autumn a 5/4 mm with boots, gloves and hood is standard.
Hiekkasärkät is a full holiday resort — hotels, spa, restaurants, golf and a water park — with parking right behind the dunes and a kite school operating in summer. In July the beach is busy with swimmers, so use the designated kite areas. Suitable for all levels, and one of the friendliest beginner spots in Finland.
