About this spot
Hvide Sande is a fishing town on a narrow sand bar between Ringkøbing Fjord and the North Sea, and it is one of the best kitesurf areas in northern Europe. On the fjord side you find huge areas of shallow, standing-depth flat water — ideal for learning and freestyle — while a short walk over the dunes brings you to the open North Sea beach with proper waves for advanced riding. Several kite schools, shops and a strong local scene are based here.
The fjord side works in a wide wind window: the main launches face west to south-west, so westerly and south-westerly winds blow onshore to side-onshore; easterly winds are offshore at the fjord launches but work on the sea side, where they blow side-offshore to offshore and demand full self-sufficiency. On the sea side, west to north-west winds are onshore and the safe directions. The compass on this card describes the fjord side — pick the correct side for the day's wind before you launch.
Key hazards are the Hvide Sande lock and harbour channel connecting fjord and sea (strong current and ship traffic — stay well clear), fishing nets in the fjord, and strong currents and heavy shore break on the sea side. Parking is available at the fjord launches and beach car parks; zones and school areas are marked in season and should be checked locally.
