About this spot
Rømø is a Wadden Sea island linked to the mainland by a causeway, famous for some of the widest beaches in Europe — at Lakolk and Sønderstrand the hard, flat sand stretches for kilometres, and you can drive and park your car right on the beach. The water is shallow over sandbanks with a large tidal range, giving anything from flat tidal pools to choppy water and small waves depending on the tide.
The beaches face west to south-west: south-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the best directions; south and north run along the beach. Easterly winds are offshore and dangerous. Tides are the main hazard: the tidal range is large, water floods the sandbanks and channels quickly on the incoming tide, and you can be cut off on outer banks — always check the tide table. Cars can also get trapped by soft sand and rising water.
Kiting is restricted to designated zones in season and parts of the island are protected nature reserve — check local signage. There are campsites, holiday centres, cafés and shops on the island. Suits all levels in onshore winds at the right tide, but the tidal environment demands respect.
