About this spot

Krapets, a small seaside village near Durankulak lake on the Romanian border, has quietly become one of the best kitesurfing spots on the Bulgarian north coast. The long sandy beach and shallow, gently shelving entry give plenty of room for beginners, and in summer the coast's regular north and north-easterly winds blow side-onshore along the beach, creating pleasant flat-to-choppy water.

The nearby Durankulak lake and marshes form part of a protected wetland, so the hinterland stays undeveloped — expect a quiet, natural setting rather than a resort strip. Easterly winds are onshore and comfortable for kiting, while southerly to westerly directions blow over the land and are offshore: the nearest downwind shore is far away, so never launch in S, SW or W wind. The bottom is clean sand throughout.

Facilities are minimal: the village has guesthouses, small shops and beach parking in season, but there is no rescue service or kite school on the beach — go with a buddy and kite within your limits. The Black Sea here is comfortable from June to September (22–25 °C); outside that window bring a 4/3 mm or thicker wetsuit.
