About this spot

Shabla, near Bulgaria's north-eastern tip and the Cape Shabla lighthouse, sits on the wildest stretch of the coast: low dunes, Shabla lake behind the beach and nothing to break the wind for kilometres. The coast here faces north-east, so the prevailing north and north-easterly winds arrive side-onshore with real strength — this is statistically the windiest corner of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

The open sea brings genuine wave riding — short, punchy Black Sea chop that builds into proper waves in fresh N/NE winds. E is onshore and workable, while NW is side-shore and gusty. Everything from S around to W is offshore and dangerous: the beach is isolated, with soft dunes, no rescue and a long way to the nearest road. The bottom is sand with occasional stones; the beach is wide, so launching is easy, but staying upwind matters.

Access is via the Shabla turnoff from road 901, then a dirt track toward the beach — a regular car can make it in dry conditions. The town of Shabla has small hotels, shops and a campsite; Durankulak and Krapets are close by. For confident intermediates and wave riders only; beginners should head to Pomorie or Krapets instead.
