About this spot
La Ventana, about an hour south-east of La Paz, is one of the best-known winter kite destinations in North America. From roughly November to March the 'El Norte' wind funnels down the Sea of Cortez and, helped by daytime heating, blows side-shore along the beach on most days, often 15-25 knots.
The beach is long and sandy, with a lot of kite schools, rental centres and campgrounds in the village, so lessons, gear and rescue are easy to find. The water is choppy rather than flat, with small wind swell on stronger days; the beach drops off quickly, so beginners learn with a school and a boat or radio set-up rather than in standing depth.
Watch the shorebreak on strong days, the crowd in front of the main launch, and the deep water: a dropped kite drifts south down the coast quickly. A westerly blows offshore over the mountains and is a no-ride direction.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from independent spot guides and the general descriptions of the La Ventana and Holbox schools. Launch pins, which school operates where, beach and reserve rules and fees change from season to season, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. The beginner label for El Sargento and the Holbox launch rules were not confirmed from a primary source. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.
