About this spot
Lake Garda, between the Alps and the Po plain, is a unique fresh-water kite spot famous for its two reliable thermal winds: the Pelèr blows from the north from early morning until mid-morning, and the Ora blows from the south from early afternoon until sunset. The steep mountain walls funnel the wind along the lake, making it one of the most wind-reliable spots in Europe from spring to autumn.
There is almost no beach — the shore drops straight into deep water — so kiting here works with a boat-lift service: the kite centres at Malcesine, Campione and Navene take you out by boat, you launch from the boat or a small platform, and they pick you up afterwards. The Pelèr (N) and Ora (S) both blow along the lake axis and are the working winds; cross winds from the east or west are gusty and useless. The water is deep, cold in spring (bring a wetsuit even in summer mornings) and the wind near the shore is shadowed by the mountains.
Kite centres at Malcesine, Campione del Garda and Navene offer lift services, schools and rental; parking in the lakeside towns; the area is a full holiday destination. Suited to confident riders who can waterstart and stay upwind; beginners can learn with the boat-supported schools.
