About this spot
Lo Stagnone, between Marsala and Trapani in western Sicily, is one of the most famous kitesurf lagoons in Europe. The lagoon is enormous, enclosed by the islands of the Stagnone nature reserve, and almost entirely standing depth — a huge flat-water playground with warm water that works in nearly every wind direction. It is one of the best places in the world to learn and to train freestyle.
Because the lagoon is enclosed, it works with almost any wind: the Mistral (NW), Sirocco (SE), Tramontana (N) and the summer sea breezes all find a usable shore somewhere. The compass on this card reflects the main launch areas on the eastern shore, where westerly and northerly winds are side-onshore. The bottom is sand and mud with seagrass patches; the water is shallow almost everywhere, with a few deeper channels. Watch for the marked boat channels and the salt-pan windmills on the horizon.
Dozens of kite schools and centres line the lagoon, with parking along the shore road, cafés and accommodation in Birgi and Marsala. Warm water from April to November; in mid-summer the lagoon can get very warm and the wind lighter — mornings and spring/autumn are best. Kite zones and natural-reserve rules should be checked locally.
