About this spot
Mändjala and the neighbouring Järve beach form one of the few long sandy beaches on Saaremaa, on the island's south coast a few kilometres west of Kuressaare. The water is shallow over sandbars facing the Gulf of Riga, giving flat to choppy conditions that suit learning and freestyle, with small waves in strong southerlies.
The beach faces south, so south, south-west and south-east winds are onshore to side-onshore. West and east become cross-shore along the coast; anything from the north is offshore and must not be ridden. Pine forest behind the beach can make cross-shore winds gusty near the shore.
There are campsites and holiday homes around Mändjala and Järve, with parking at the forest access roads. Facilities are seasonal. Exact launch points and access rules should be confirmed locally.
