About this spot

Pirita is the long sandy beach on the east side of Tallinn Bay, a short drive from the city centre, and the most convenient spot for Tallinn-based riders. The bay is fairly open to the north and west, so the water is usually choppy with short wind-swell in strong winds. The sand bottom shelves faster than the Gulf of Riga spots, so expect to be out of your depth sooner.

The beach faces roughly north-west: north-west, north and west-north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the best directions; west and north-north-east work as cross-shore for experienced riders. Anything from the south or east is offshore across the city and dangerous. The Pirita river mouth and marina sit at the southern end — avoid the channel and boat traffic there.

Facilities are good: parking along Pirita tee, cafés, toilets and lifeguards in season. In summer the beach is crowded with swimmers, so local kite zones and any time restrictions must be checked on site.
