About this spot
Ristna sits on the western tip of the Kõpu peninsula on Hiiumaa and faces the open Baltic Sea. It is Estonia's best-known surfing area: westerly storms send real ocean-style swell onto the coast, and on the right day it is the most powerful wave spot in the country.
The coast here is exposed and partly rocky, with boulders and stony patches mixed with sand, and the water deepens quickly. South-west, west and north-west winds blow onshore to side-onshore; anything easterly is offshore towards open sea and extremely dangerous. The area is remote, with no organised rescue — ride only with others, in good visibility, and know your exit points.
Access is via the road to Ristna lighthouse, with limited parking near the coast and a small surf/holiday centre nearby. Exact launch spots, rocks and access rules must be checked with local surfers.
