Power Plant Beach (Mina Said)

Mina Said (Suud), Al Khiran, Ahmadi · Kuwait · 28.687°N, 48.380°E

Kuwait's wide southern freeride beach: flat to choppy water that builds small waves when the onshore wind pushes, with a huge sandy launch — boxed in by a bridge, the power plant and an access question nobody has answered.

About this spot

Power Plant Beach is a sandy stretch on Kuwait's southern Gulf coast, south of the plant it is named after, between Mina Said (Suud) and Al Khiran. The water runs flat to choppy and builds small waves when a stronger onshore wind gets up, and the beach is described as having plenty of room to lay out — with the note that it is not as dirty as some of the other southern beaches.

The wind is dependable rather than dramatic. The prevailing Shamal arrives from the north-north-west, and the modelled record for this point gives monthly averages of 12 to 15 knots with the strongest month in July, on a count of 194 days a year reaching force 4 or more; a separate count of plain averages sits lower, at 7 to 10 knots. Either way the months with the most reliable wind are also the months when the heat, not the weather, decides your session.

Two things keep this off the beginner list. The beach is hemmed in by industry — a long bridge at the north end, and the power and desalination plant with its fence line directly behind the sand — and the destination record states plainly that whether beach access beside the plant is still allowed is unconfirmed, with no rescue cover confirmed either. Ride it once you can sail upwind and self-rescue, not to find out whether you can.

Access & parking

About 100 km south of Kuwait City: follow the signs to Mina Said (Suud), pass the power plant and drop onto the sand south of it. A 4x4 gets you down; without one it is a longer walk.

Parking: Park at the top and walk in unless you have a 4x4 to drive onto the sand.

Amenities

  • Wide sandy beach with lots of launch and rigging space
  • Flat to choppy water, with small waves when the onshore wind builds
  • 194 days a year reach force 4 or more on the modelled count
  • Both Kuwait schools name this beach as one they ride

Needs local verification: Sources: the Kiteforum record for Power Plant Beach (flat to choppy, waves with stronger winds on an onshore direction, long bridge on the north side, sandy beach with lots of space, 'not as dirty as other beaches', about 100 km south of Kuwait City via Mina Said (Suud), 4x4 onto the sand, generally lighter winds), the Kite Insider spot card (level intermediate to advanced, 'not for beginners here', no shallow or standing section published, no rescue cover confirmed, plant access unconfirmed, modelled monthly averages 12–15 kt with the prevailing wind from the NNW and June–July rated best) and Kite Jungle's count of 194 days a year at force 4 or more. Every wind figure is modelled on a 10–25 km grid rather than measured at the beach, and the coordinate comes from the destination record, so treat the pin as approximate. Needs local verification.
