About this spot
Prasonisi, at the southern tip of Rhodes, is one of the most famous kite spots in the world. A narrow sand bar connects the island to a small islet; on the Aegean (eastern) side the wind blows onshore and builds waves, while on the Mediterranean (western) side the same wind blows offshore over the sand bar and the water stays flat and shallow. One wind, two completely different playgrounds — freestyle and learning on the flat side, wave riding on the Aegean side.
The summer Meltemi blows from the north-west to west, very reliably from June to September, often 20–30 knots and stronger at the cape due to the venturi effect. This card's compass describes the flat Mediterranean side, where W and NW are the working directions; on the Aegean side the same wind is onshore. Easterly winds reverse everything and are rarely good here. The wind is gusty right behind the sand bar — walk a little upwind for cleaner air.
There are kite centres with schools, rental and storage right on the spot, parking behind the beach, and simple accommodation nearby; the nearest towns are Kattavia and Lardos. Warm water all summer. Beginners should stay on the flat side with a school; the wave side is for experienced riders.
