About this spot

St. Peter-Ording is a huge North Sea beach — up to 2 km wide at low tide and about 12 km long — and a stop on the Kitesurf World Cup tour. Facing the open North Sea to the west, it delivers strong, steady wind and waves over sandbanks, with conditions changing constantly through the tide cycle: lagoon-like flat pools between sandbanks at low tide, choppy water and breaking waves at high tide.

South-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the best directions. South and north run along the beach; anything easterly is offshore towards the open North Sea and extremely dangerous. TIDES ARE THE KEY HAZARD: the tidal range is around 3 m, the incoming tide floods the sandbanks and channels (Priele) quickly and creates strong currents, and areas that were walkable can become deep water within minutes. Always check the tide table, never get cut off on an outer sandbank, and avoid riding in the channels at mid-tide.

Kiting is only allowed in designated zones (e.g. at the Ording beach section); beaches are part of the Wadden Sea National Park. You can drive and park on parts of the beach at certain times (paid), and there are schools, beach bars on stilts and lifeguards in season. Suited to intermediate and expert riders; beginners only with a school.
