About this spot
Wiek lies on the Wieker Bodden, one of the shallow brackish lagoons (Bodden) on the north-west of Rügen, Germany's largest island. The water is standing depth far out over a mostly sandy bottom, and because the lagoon is enclosed there are no waves — just flat water or light chop. That makes it one of the best places on the German Baltic coast to learn, and a flat-water playground for freestyle.
The main launches face roughly west into the lagoon, so south-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore. South and north run side-shore and work with care; easterly winds blow from the land and are offshore. Water level in the Bodden changes with persistent wind, and reed belts and seagrass line parts of the shore.
There are kite schools, campsites and holiday homes around Wiek in season, with parking near the harbour and beaches. Large parts of the Bodden are protected areas — kiting is only allowed in designated zones, so check local rules before launching.
