About this spot
Apelviken, just south of Varberg on the Halland coast, is Sweden's wave-sailing capital: a wide sandy bay open to the Kattegat that picks up proper waves in south-westerly and westerly winds. The bay has a long surf and windsurf tradition and is one of the few real wave spots in Sweden.
The bay faces roughly south-west: SW and W winds blow onshore to side-onshore and build the best waves; north-westerly works as side-shore with cleaner wind. South-easterly to easterly winds are offshore from the land and not rideable. The bottom is sand, the water deepens moderately, and in strong onshore winds there is a heavy shore break and rip currents. The water is cold most of the year.
There is a surf/kite centre and schools in season, parking near the beach, and Varberg town with full services a few minutes away. Suited to intermediate and expert riders; on big days it is experts only.
