About this spot
Brouwersdam is a wide sand bar connecting Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee, and one of the most popular kitesurf spots in Europe. On the North Sea side a huge sandy beach delivers side-onshore wind and waves over sandbars; behind the spit, on the Grevelingen lagoon side, the water is flat and shallow — perfect for learning and freestyle. At low tide shallow lagoons form on the sandbanks.
The sea-side beach faces roughly west to north-west: south-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the best directions; north and south run along the beach. Easterly winds are offshore on the sea side but work on the Grevelingen side. The compass on this card describes the sea side — pick the correct side for the day's wind. Tides shape the conditions: strong currents run in the channels between sandbanks, and the water state changes completely through the tide cycle.
Infrastructure is outstanding: several kite schools and shops, beach pavilions, campsites, big paid car parks and marked kite zones in season. The beach is extremely busy in summer — respect the zones and swimmers. Currents and the size of the area make it best for intermediate riders and up on the sea side; the lagoon side suits beginners with a school.
