About this spot

Zandvoort is the best-known beach resort near Amsterdam, a long, wide sandy beach facing the open North Sea. Westerly and north-westerly winds bring proper waves breaking over sandbars, making it a popular wave and big-air spot for the Randstad kite scene.

The beach faces roughly west: south-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the safe directions; north and south run along the beach. Easterly winds are offshore and deadly. The main hazards are strong rip currents in the channels between sandbars, a heavy shore break in onshore storms, and the sheer number of swimmers and beach visitors in summer — kiting is restricted to designated zones and times in season.

Access is easy by car (paid parking) or train to Zandvoort station. Beach pavilions, cafés, lifeguards and kite schools operate in season. Suited to intermediate and expert riders; check the current kite zone rules before launching.
