About this spot
Scheveningen and Kijkduin are The Hague's two city beaches on the open North Sea. Scheveningen is the famous resort beach with the pier and a lively boulevard; Kijkduin, a few kilometres south, is quieter and dune-backed. Both deliver classic North Sea kiting: side-onshore westerlies, waves over sandbars and strong tidal currents.
The coast faces roughly west to north-west: south-west, west and north-west winds are onshore to side-onshore and the best directions; north and south run along the beach. Easterly winds are offshore and dangerous. Stay well clear of the Scheveningen harbour moles and the pier — currents concentrate there. Rip currents between sandbars are the main everyday hazard.
Kiting is only allowed in designated zones, which change by season and beach section — in summer large parts are off-limits, so check the current rules (the Kijkduin side generally offers more room). Infrastructure is excellent: paid parking, beach pavilions, lifeguards, kite schools and shops. Suited to intermediate and expert riders.
