About this spot
Workum lies on the IJsselmeer, the vast shallow fresh-water lake in the heart of the Netherlands. At the kite beach south of the town the bottom stays standing depth for hundreds of metres, the water is flat to lightly choppy, and there are no tides or currents — one of the most forgiving learning environments in Europe, and a freestyle favourite.
The launch faces roughly west to south-west across the lake: south-west, west and north-west winds blow onshore to side-onshore and are the safest directions; south and north work as side-shore. Easterly winds blow from the land and are offshore — do not ride. The bottom is mostly sand with muddy and weedy patches, and the water can be weedy in late summer. Watch for the Workum harbour channel and sailing traffic.
There is a kite school and rental in season, parking near the beach, and cafés and campsites in and around Workum. Kite zones and any seasonal rules should be confirmed locally.
