About this spot
Dhangethi is a working local island in South Ari Atoll, and it is the Maldives kite trip that does not require a resort room: guesthouses, cafés and a dive centre sit within walking distance of the launch, and the island's water-sports offering includes an IKO-certified kite school that lists its season as May to October. The lagoon is shallow and flat, the water warm all year, and because the base is a local island rather than an all-inclusive resort, lessons and rental cost a fraction of the resort rate.
Two things shape every session here. The first is the tide: the lagoon is tide-dependent, so at low water the reef and sand flats come close to the surface and the rideable area shrinks — sessions are planned around the water level, not just the wind. The second is the neighbourhood: South Ari Atoll is a protected whale-shark area, and snorkel and dive boats move through the same water, so the launch is busy in a way an empty sandbank is not.
Everything about this spot also depends on a permission you cannot see from a forecast. Kiting on a local island runs through the operator and the island council's designated tourist beach, and the exact stretch of sand, the season and the rules can change without notice. Confirm with the school before booking travel, and expect to be told which side of the island to ride and when.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from resort water-sports pages, school listings and established spot guides (KiteInsider, KiteJungle, Breeza). In the Maldives kiting runs through a resort or a licensed operator rather than a public beach, and on local islands the launch sits inside the island council's designated tourist beach — both can change without notice. Which side of an island a centre uses in each monsoon, the exact launch pin, rescue cover, and any permit or insurance requirement all need confirming on site; coordinates are approximate.
Local hazards
- Tide-dependent: at low water the reef and sand flats rise close to the surface
- Whale-shark and snorkel boat traffic in the South Ari protected area
- Launch sits on a local island's designated tourist beach — permissions and boundaries change
