About this spot
Olhuveli is a resort island in South Malé Atoll, a 45-minute speedboat from Velana International Airport, and the kiting runs through the resort's water-sports operation rather than off a public beach. Its useful trick is geography: the island is made of three linked islands with a lagoon between them, and the launch moves with the season — the south side takes the south-west monsoon, the east coast takes the north-east monsoon. Ask which side is open the day you arrive, because the answer decides your session.
The water is warm, shallow and flat across most of the lagoon, with small to medium waves picking up along the reef edges at the right tide. That makes it a workable learning lagoon and still something to progress on, but the wind is the limiting factor: the Maldives is a light-wind country, and Olhuveli reads as a resort holiday where kiting works in season (roughly May to October) rather than a trip with a session guaranteed every day.
The hazards are the ones that come with a busy resort atoll: reef and coral underfoot, dive boats and water-sports traffic crossing the riding area, and the bridges between the islands. Beginners should ride only with the centre's cover and inside the area they mark out; experienced riders who bring their own gear get the most out of the place, because rental is where the cost of a Maldives kite trip really sits.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from resort water-sports pages, school listings and established spot guides (KiteInsider, KiteJungle, Breeza). In the Maldives kiting runs through a resort or a licensed operator rather than a public beach, and on local islands the launch sits inside the island council's designated tourist beach — both can change without notice. Which side of an island a centre uses in each monsoon, the exact launch pin, rescue cover, and any permit or insurance requirement all need confirming on site; coordinates are approximate.
Local hazards
- Reef and coral in and around the lagoon
- Dive boats and water-sports traffic crossing the riding area
- Bridges between the three islands
- Light wind — expect days when nothing rides
