About this spot
Maafushi is the Maldives' best-known local island: a short, cheap ferry or speedboat hop from Malé, dozens of guesthouses, and a watersports operator on the island that offers kitesurfing alongside windsurfing — including a try-out session for people who have never ridden and a multi-day lesson for those who want to learn. The water is a flat, shallow lagoon over sand, warm all year, and the best months read as December to April under the north-east monsoon.
What makes Maafushi different from a resort lagoon is that the beach is shared. Kiting happens on the council's designated tourist beach rather than on private sand, and that beach is where visitors also swim and sunbathe. That is a real constraint, not a formality: the riding area is bounded, swimmers are in the water, and the stretch you are allowed to kite on is set locally and can move.
The other constraint is the wind itself. Maafushi is not a reliable wind machine — monthly averages sit in the single digits to low teens for much of the year, so plan for a kite trip with other things in it, and bring a big kite or a foil if you have your own. Confirm with the operator which part of the beach is open for kiting on your dates, and treat any answer that differs from this page as the correct one.

Amenities
- Watersports operator offering kitesurf try-outs and multi-day lessons
- Guesthouses, cafés and shops on a local island
- Cheapest access from Malé of any Maldives kite spot
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from resort water-sports pages, school listings and established spot guides (KiteInsider, KiteJungle, Breeza). In the Maldives kiting runs through a resort or a licensed operator rather than a public beach, and on local islands the launch sits inside the island council's designated tourist beach — both can change without notice. Which side of an island a centre uses in each monsoon, the exact launch pin, rescue cover, and any permit or insurance requirement all need confirming on site; coordinates are approximate.
Local hazards
- Launch sits on the council's designated tourist beach — confirm the exact stretch and that kiting is permitted there
- Shared with swimmers and sunbathers
- Coral patches in the lagoon
- Light and variable wind most months
