About this spot

Dhërmi, tucked under the Ceraunian mountains on the Ionian Riviera, is Albania's most beautiful kite address: a long pebble-and-sand beach in a bay of startlingly clear water, with the coastal road switchbacking up behind it. Kiting here is quieter than in the north — the thermal breeze from the west and north-west usually builds in the afternoon, and those who come are mostly foilers, board riders and wave riders chasing the light Ionian swell.

The bay faces west and south-west, so westerly and north-westerly winds are onshore or side-shore; southerly winds blow along the coast but tend to be gusty and are best left to confident riders. North-easterly and easterly winds come down off the mountains as offshore Bora — cold, sudden and dangerous, with no downwind escape. The bottom is coarse pebble and sand and the water deepens faster than on the northern beaches, so deep-water self-rescues matter and a helmet in onshore chop is sensible.

Dhërmi fills up in July and August with beach bars, sunbeds and tourists — kite early or late and launch well away from the bathing areas. Outside the peak weeks it is almost empty, and the same goes for services: no rescue, no official kite zone and limited accommodation once the season closes. Himara and Porto Palermo are close to the south and Vlorë about an hour north. Beach access, fees and where you may launch shift with the season and must be checked on site.
