About this spot

Velipojë and the neighbouring Viluni beach, a couple of kilometres south of the Montenegrin border, are the start of Albania's 362 km of Adriatic and Ionian coastline — and by most accounts the best stretch of it for kitesurfing. The beach is enormous: wide, clean sand running for kilometres with a gentle, shallow entry, and the prevailing summer Maestral blows in from the west, strengthened by daytime thermals. The far end toward the Buna river mouth stays quiet even in high season.

Westerly winds arrive onshore or side-shore and the water stays flat to lightly choppy over the sandbank, which makes learning, foiling and practice comfortable. Northerly winds blow side-shore along the beach; southerlies are rarer and can be gusty. Everything from north-east around through east to south-east is offshore — the winter Bora sweeps down from the mountains as a cold, gusty and dangerous wind, and easterly directions blow over the coastal plain with the nearest downwind shore a long way off. The shallowness cuts both ways: at low tide you can walk a long way before there is depth enough to fly a kite.

Velipojë is a low-key Albanian seaside resort of guesthouses, beach bars and simple restaurants, with the Buna river and its wetlands behind the dunes — a birdwatcher's paradise. There are still no official kite-spot structures, no rescue service and no established beach rules, so you launch and ride at your own responsibility and must keep clear of parasols and swimmers. Shkodër is about 30 minutes away and Tirana roughly two hours.
