About this spot
Golden Bay and the neighbouring Għajn Tuffieħa are Malta's most beautiful sandy beaches, facing north-west into the open Mediterranean. When the Majjistral (NW) — Malta's most frequent and often strongest wind — blows, this coast gets real swell and clean side-onshore wind. It is the island's closest thing to a wave spot.
NW, W and N winds work best; WNW swells can bring proper waves after winter storms. S, SE and E winds come over the land and are offshore and dangerous. The bottom is sand, but the beaches are exposed: shore-break, rip currents and quickly deepening water make this a spot for confident riders only. In strong onshore conditions the waves close out onto the beach — timing your launch and landing matters.
There is parking above both beaches and a couple of cafés in season, but no rescue service — you are on your own, so ride with a buddy. Summer is swimming season and kitesurfing is not appropriate; the season is autumn to spring. For experienced riders who want Malta's most dramatic sessions.
