About this spot
Salina Bay, between Buġibba and the Salina salt pans, is a useful northerly-wind option on Malta's north coast. The bay faces north, so N, NE and NW winds blow in off the sea — it is one of the few Maltese spots that works in a straight northerly, when Mellieħa is cross-offshore and the south coast is flat.
N, NNE and NE are the working directions; NW is side-shore and rideable; S and SW are offshore over the land and dangerous. The water is choppy over a bottom of sand and rock, with a shallow shelf near the shore that deepens into the bay. Watch for the rocky sections and the concrete slipways — boots are recommended. The bay sees some boat traffic, so keep clear of moorings and fairways.
Access is from the coast road with parking near the salt pans. St. Paul's Bay and Buġibba with full tourist services are minutes away. Suitable for intermediates and up — the rocky launch areas and boat traffic need some experience.
