About this spot
Mellieħa Bay (Għadira) is Malta's biggest sandy beach and the island's most established kitesurfing spot. The wide bay faces north-east, so the classic Maltese Gregale — the cool NE wind that blows regularly through autumn, winter and spring — arrives side-onshore and clean. The shore shelves gently over sand, giving a forgiving area for riding and relaunching close to the beach.
NE, N and E winds work best; NW (Majjistral, Malta's dominant wind) blows side-shore along the bay and is rideable but gustier near the headlands. S and SW winds come over the land and are offshore and dangerous. The water is choppy with a sandy bottom; the bay deepens gradually. Summer (June–August) is for swimming only — the beach is packed and kitesurfing is restricted; the kite season here is essentially September to May.
Mellieħa village above the bay has full services, and there is parking along the coast road and behind the beach. The water is warm by European standards — around 25–27 °C in late summer and rarely below 15 °C in winter. Suitable for intermediates and up in season; beginners should work with the local schools outside the crowded summer months.
