About this spot
St. Thomas Bay at Marsaskala is the go-to spot on Malta's south-east coast. The bay faces south-east, so when the warm, humid Sirocco (SE) blows in from North Africa — often bringing the strongest wind of the Maltese autumn and spring — this is where the local fleet gathers. The bay is partly sheltered by low headlands, keeping the chop manageable inside.
SE, S and E winds work best, blowing side-onshore into the bay; SW is side-shore and rideable with care. N and NW winds are offshore and dangerous here — on those days the locals drive to Mellieħa instead. The bottom is sand with rocky patches and seagrass further out; boots are recommended. The bay is shared with swimmers and small boats in season, so stay outside the marked swimming areas.
Marsaskala is a lively seaside town with cafés and restaurants along the promenade, and parking near the bay. The water is warm — up to 26–27 °C in late summer. Suitable for intermediates and up; the rocky entries and boat traffic call for confident kite handling.
