About this spot
Grótta, on the tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula at the edge of Reykjavík, is the capital's kitesurfing home. The lighthouse headland faces north-west into Faxaflói bay, so NW and N winds come in clean off the sea, with W and NE rideable on the flanking beaches. On a good autumn day you can rig up ten minutes after leaving the office — a rarity among world capitals.
The spot is strongly tidal: at low tide a long sand-and-stone causeway dries out to the lighthouse islet, and the shallows extend far; at high tide the water reaches the shore and the usable area shrinks. S, SE and E winds come over the town and are offshore, gusty and dangerous. The bottom is sand, stone and rock — boots are essential. The water is cold all year: 8–11 °C even in August, so a drysuit or a 5/4 mm with full neoprene accessories is standard.
Important: Grótta is a protected bird reserve and the tip of the peninsula is closed to all visitors during the nesting season (roughly May to mid-July) — respect the closure signs. Outside that period, park at the small car park by the golf course and walk out. For confident intermediates and up; beginners should look for a school operating at friendlier beaches.
