About this spot
Þorlákshöfn, about 45 minutes east of Reykjavík, is the windiest reliable beach on Iceland's south coast. The long black-sand shore faces south into the Atlantic, and the low, flat hinterland lets S, SW and SE winds arrive uninterrupted — locals rate it as the most consistent wind spot in the country.
S, SW and SE blow side-onshore to onshore and work best; W is side-shore and rideable. N and NE come over the land and are offshore and dangerous. The beach is steep, the shore-break is heavy in swell and rip currents are common — this is powerful, exposed ocean riding, not a learning beach. The bottom is black sand and pebble. Water temperature peaks around 10–11 °C in August; a drysuit is the sensible choice most of the year.
The town of Þorlákshöfn has a harbour, a campsite and basic services, and there is parking near the beach. The south coast weather changes fast — check the forecast and the tide, and never ride alone. For experienced riders comfortable in strong wind and heavy shore-break.
