About this spot
Ólafsfjörður, on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in north Iceland, offers kitesurfing inside a deep fjord framed by steep mountains. N and NE winds funnel down the fjord and accelerate, giving surprisingly strong, smooth wind inside while the open coast rages. It is one of the most spectacular settings imaginable for a session.
N, NE and NW winds work inside the fjord; S and SW come over the mountains and are turbulent, gusty and dangerous. The water is flat to choppy over a dark sand-and-stone bottom, deepening quickly from the shore. Fjord wind is famously switchy — it can drop or swing in minutes — so stay within self-rescue distance of the shore. The water is very cold: 8–10 °C at best in late summer, and a drysuit is essential.
Ólafsfjörður is a small fishing town with a campsite, a geothermal pool and basic services, linked to Siglufjörður and Dalvík by mountain tunnels. There is parking near the shore. For self-sufficient intermediates and experts who value scenery and solitude over convenience.
