About this spot
Sandvík, on the south-western corner of the Reykjanes peninsula near the Bridge Between Continents, faces the open North Atlantic with nothing between it and Greenland. When SW and W swells roll in, this black-sand beach gets powerful, heavy waves and clean side-onshore wind — Iceland's most serious wave-riding venue.
SW, W and S winds work best; NW is side-shore and rideable in smaller swell. E and NE come over the land and are offshore and dangerous. The beach is steep black sand with a punishing shore-break in bigger swell, and the water deepens fast. Rip currents are strong and there is no rescue service — this is self-reliant, expert-only territory. The water is 8–11 °C in summer and near freezing in winter: full drysuit, hood, gloves and boots.
Access is via the Reykjanes coastal road (425) with rough parking near the beach. The area is volcanically active — check current conditions and road closures before travelling. For experienced wave riders only; the combination of cold, swell and isolation demands full preparation.
