About this spot
Ližnjan, on the southern tip of Istria near Pula, is the region's main kite spot: a rocky-to-pebble coast open to the northern Adriatic that works with both of the Adriatic's great winds. The Bora (NE) is a powerful, cold, gusty wind that can exceed 40 knots — for experts only; the Jugo (SE) is a warm southerly-easterly that brings waves and more moderate, steadier conditions.
The coast faces roughly south-east: the Jugo (SE to S) blows onshore to side-onshore and is the friendlier working wind; the Bora (NE) blows offshore from the land — extremely gusty and dangerous near the shore, rideable only by experts who know the spot. Westerly and northerly winds are gusty over the land. The shore is rock and pebble with sea urchins — booties are recommended — and the water deepens quickly.
A kite school operates here in season; parking near the coast; Pula with full services is about 10 km away. Warm water in summer. Suited to intermediate and expert riders; the Bora days are strictly for experts.
