About this spot

The Neretva river delta near Komin, between Split and Dubrovnik, is Croatia's kite mecca. Where the river meets the Adriatic, a huge shallow sand spit has formed: standing-depth flat water over sand, protected from the open sea. On summer afternoons the Maestral — a reliable thermal north-westerly — builds almost daily to 15–22 knots, making it one of the most dependable learning and freestyle spots on the Adriatic.

The launch faces roughly south-west into the shallow bay: the Maestral (NW) blows side-onshore and is the working wind; westerly and south-westerly sea breezes also work. Easterly and north-easterly winds (including the Bora) are offshore or gusty over the land and not rideable here. The water is standing depth over a large area with a sandy bottom; watch for the river channel currents and moored boats. The water is warm from June to October.

Kite schools operate at the spot in season; parking near the beach; the towns of Ploče and Opuzen are nearby. Ideal for beginners and freestyle; one of the warmest and safest learning environments in Croatia.
