About this spot
Mazotos, near Kiti village on the south coast, is where Cypriot kitesurfing happens: the Kahuna beach zone hosts the island's main kite schools, and the reliable summer sea breeze makes it one of the most dependable spots in the eastern Mediterranean. From late spring to early autumn the afternoon thermal kicks in almost daily, building through the afternoon to its strongest between 14:00 and 18:00.
SW is the classic thermal direction and blows side-shore; S and WSW also work well. Winds from the north come off the island and are dangerous — gusty, offshore and pushing you out to sea. The entry is a shallow sandy walk-out, the water is flat close to shore with light chop further out, and there are no significant tides in the Mediterranean. The water is warm most of the year (roughly 17–28 °C): boardshorts or a shorty in summer, a 3/2 mm in winter.
The kite zone has parking right behind the beach, a kite centre with rental, rescue and lessons, plus tavernas in Mazotos village. Suitable for everyone: beginners learn in front of the schools, freestylers ride the flat patches. In high summer the beach shares space with swimmers — stay inside the marked kite area.
