About this spot

Kintai is a kite centre, not just a beach. The Kintų kaitavimo centras runs from the lagoon shore in the village: certified instructors, lessons from absolute beginner to advanced, equipment rental, accommodation in a homestead and even instructor training. The spot itself is shallow and sandy with a comfortable exit and plenty of room, and the centre keeps it orderly with clearly marked kiting zones and a cap on how many kiters are on the beach and in the water at once — which is why the same shallow bank works for a first lesson and for a competent rider chasing a session.

The lagoon opens up here with a long westerly fetch, so once the wind builds the water goes from flat to a proper chop: beginners stay in the shallow zone while stronger riders use the chop for jumps and directional riding. The money direction is W through SW blowing across the lagoon and slightly onshore; a north-westerly works too but gets gustier off the low headland. Anything with east in it is offshore on this shore and must be avoided — the far shore is several kilometres away.

The village side is easy: cafés, guesthouses and a shop, a swimming beach, a long pier and an observation tower on the shore, and parking close to the water. Watch for fishing nets and marker posts in the shallows — locals have fished these banks for generations — and remember the lagoon is a working waterway, so give boats and sailing traffic room. A live camera at the kite spot lets you check the water state before you drive down.

Local hazards

  • Easterly winds are offshore across several kilometres of open lagoon — do not ride them
  • Fishing nets and marker posts in the shallows
  • The long westerly fetch builds a real chop once the wind picks up — the outer water is not beginner territory
  • Boat and sailing traffic on the lagoon, and a swimming beach next to the kite zones
  • Limited space: the centre caps how many kiters are on the beach and in the water, so respect the zones and the queue
