About this spot
Monciškės is the Baltic Sea wave spot in Lithuania: a wide, wild sandy beach north of Šventoji with a series of sandbars that shape clean, breaking waves. On a solid south-westerly or westerly you get side-onshore wind and waist-to-head-high surf — the best wave riding and big-air conditions in the country.
It is also a place to learn, but only through the school: WindTrain runs kiteboarding lessons here from its base on the beach (with on-site accommodation at the Jūra Spot), with IKO-certified instructors teaching beginners and advanced riders side by side. A self-taught beginner should not treat a wave beach as a training area — the same sandbars that make the waves make the water unpredictable.
This is open sea and it demands respect. Rip currents run in the troughs between the sandbars, the shore break can be heavy in strong onshore wind, and easterly offshore winds are deadly — they will carry you out to sea. In summer the beach is full of swimmers, so ride outside the swimming zones; a designated kiting strip immediately south of the main beach access has been reported, so follow the signs and local advice rather than assuming the whole beach is yours.
