About this spot

Melnragė is the most accessible Baltic wave spot in Lithuania — you can finish work and be on the water in twenty minutes — and the least forgiving. Kiting here was pushed by the city's beach rules into a single active-recreation zone of a few hundred metres by the northern breakwater, after the old Giruliai spot was closed to kiters. In good wind that strip fills with up to two hundred people and is shared with windsurfers, SUP paddlers and swimmers.

The water itself is real swell over a sandy bottom that drops away quickly, with waves up to about 2.5 m in a strong south-westerly — a Baltic wave championship is held on this beach. But the hazards are exactly why the local kite association has publicly called this zone unsafe for kiteboarding: the breakwater and its rip, the port's shipping lane immediately next to the zone, stones and shells underfoot, and a crowd that does not always see a flying kite.

There is no kite school or rescue service at the zone itself — the surf school at Melnragė I beach teaches boardsports, not kiting. Ride here only if you are a competent, self-rescuing expert who can handle current, chop and traffic, and expect the rules to change: the shore-access and beach regulations for Melnragė, Giruliai and Smiltynė have been under active review, so check the current ordinance and signage before you rig.

  • Stones and shells underfoot at the entry
  • Rules are municipal and still changing — check the current Klaipėda beach ordinance and signage
